The General Authority of Sports (GAS) has launched its ambitious project ‘UAE: A Destination for Sports Events’, aimed at increasing the number of international and national sports events in the country by 25 per cent. This initiative aligns with the UAE Vision 2031, striving to foster a nurturing and empowering sports environment that contributes to the UAE's status as one of the most prosperous societies globally.

His Excellency Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Director General of GAS, said: “Through the launch of this key transformative project, we aim to boost the number of sports events organised in the UAE by highlighting the advanced sports services, facilities and benefits that adhere to the highest international standards. Our unique infrastructure and state-of-the-art sports facilities have solidified the UAE's status as a premier hub for various championships and major events, advancing sports activities in the nation. Furthermore, the project strives to attain the national goal of raising the sports contribution to the non-oil gross domestic product (GDP) to 0.5 per cent by 2031. By collaborating with partners from different sports bodies around the nation, we aim to support this project to reinforce the nation's role as a global sports hub while also strengthening its international reputation following the goals of our visionary leadership.”

H.E. Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Executive Director of the Sports Development Sector at GAS, said: “The Authority has exhibited a remarkable commitment to the ‘UAE: A Destination for Sports Events’ project as part of its long-term strategy, in collaboration with partners, to boost the number of sports events in the country. It includes improving sports infrastructure, such as facilities, headquarters and sports complexes, to mark the country’s strong presence on the global sports stage. Additionally, the project seeks to encourage private-sector firms to sponsor sports events under government directives. The transformative project holds a vital role in supporting the National Sports Strategy 2031 and the objectives of the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision by setting the stage for more national and international sports events in the country.”

GAS is amplifying its efforts to improve sports facilities and complexes in the UEA while adhering to global standards. The main objectives of these initiatives are to host more national and international sporting events, reach national sports targets, and boost community involvement in sports. In line with the transformative project, the Authority will also launch UAE Award for Community Sports Events for both institutions and individuals to highlight their vital role in promoting community sports and enhancing participation in physical activities. In the coming days, an exclusive website for the award will be launched, inviting nominations from athletes from all segments of the Emirati community, whether they are part of institutions or work independently.

The transformative project also seeks to promote numerous state-of-the-art sports facilities across the country. The wide array of facilities includes the Mohammed bin Zayed Swimming Pool and Al Hudayriat Island in Abu Dhabi, Dubai Sports City and Zabeel Park in Dubai, Al Badayer Oasis and Sharjah Marine Sports Club in Sharjah, Al Zorah Nature Reserve and Al Qurm Promenade in Ajman, Al Bayt Mitwahid Hall and Walkway and Waterfront in Umm Al Quwain, Zayed Sports Complex and Ain Madhab Park in Fujairah, Jebel Jais and Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, among others.
